One of the reasons for an increase in the number of unplanned shutdowns.Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disorder and a major public health problem, affecting more than 10% of individuals in the USA and Europe. About one third of the world's population will be affected by IBS in their lifetime. Like IBS, other functional GI disorders are prevalent. Patients who suffer from IBS-C symptoms can frequently reduce their symptoms with peppermint oil. Peppermint oil is an extract of the essential oils from the leaves of M. sativa. M. sativa is native to Asia, Europe and the United States. IBS is a syndrome characterized by abdominal discomfort or pain associated with alterations in bowel habits and is associated with a disturbance of bowel function. IBS has been traditionally sub-classified into two subtypes: diarrhea predominant (IBS-D) and constipation predominant (IBS-C). Sub-typing is used to better manage patients with IBS, with a recognition of variability within these subtypes, which influences symptom presentation and treatment response. IBS, its subtypes, and other functional GI disorders are disorders of the motility or function of the GI tract. While some people with IBS have symptoms primarily in the lower GI tract, others have symptoms primarily in the upper GI tract. Often, IBS patients have mixed symptoms, with some motility-related and others related to bowel habit. Sometimes, patients will present with solely a change in bowel habits. IBS has no established cause, although several mechanisms have been implicated. A disturbance of the normal interaction between GI hormones and the central nervous system has been suggested. A disturbance in the normal enteric nervous system regulation of gut motility has also been suggested. An abnormality of the enteric nervous system response to normal gut hormones has also been suggested. Any or all of these mechanisms may be involved. Symptoms include abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, and altered bowel function between bowel movements. The pathophysiology is not fully understood. Functional gastrointestinal disorders are among the most common of all diseases affecting people. Drugs for functional GI disorders are not specifically indicated. Drugs used to treat functional GI disorders include antispasmodic agents such as dicyclomine, hyoscyamine and octopamine. Antidiarrheal drugs include loperamide. Anticholinergic agents such as hyoscyamine and atropine are also used to treat IBS.
